UPDATE - WE'RE NOW OPEN! COME SWING BY
We’ve been a bit quiet on the home front - it’s been a struggle to find the time to write these behind the scenes posts. Whilst there was lots to write about, it also came with a few frustrating delays, and we’ve been flat out over the last few months as a result.
We’re now on the home stretch; so it’s time to say what we’ve been up to:
We're excited to announce that we're completing the final steps in our full launch at the Jerwood Space in Southwark - transforming what began as a soft opening into the complete vision we've been working toward since day one.
The Jerwood Space is a leading London rehearsal venue for theatre and dance, one that has always stood for progress - pushing new ideas forward, developing talent, and championing diversity. We're honoured to be establishing our permanent home in a venue with such a rich artistic heritage.
What’s happening?
Roasting and Production:
After a year and a half of operating as coffee nomads - slot roasting on borrowed time and dreaming of what could be - we're finally putting down roots. We're bringing our production in-house - no more shuttling beans across London; no more packing and producing everything in one gruelling long day a week. Our Loring S35 is tuned and commissioned and we’re starting the process of re-dialling all of our roasts - we’re holding off releasing new coffees until we’ve completed this process, and all new releases moving forwards will be from our very own roaster. For those of you frustrated at our online shop selling out before a Wednesday; or eagerly awaiting our curated Scenery subscription - this is a huge leap forward.
Full launch of the Café & Kitchen:
Secondly - our café at the Jerwood Space won’t just be “soft open” anymore; we're about to go all in.
We're first working on bringing the kitchen to life. We've been testing and refining a menu that embodies our "profoundly straightforward" philosophy - just like our coffee offer, our menu will be carefully considered; built on quality, seasonality, and thoughtful execution. For those who have visited over the past few months of soft-launching, our wonderful baker Vita has been developing pastries and cakes that are produced fresh on site every day - but no longer is she solo in the kitchen, as we're assembling a full team to execute on the vision.
It's a big space, and while the main renovation project that has seen the front of the building be rebuilt is coming to a close, we'll be taking it slowly. We’re opening the dine-in sections in stages - first the gallery, and soon the glasshouse & courtyard garden. We’ll be offering table service brunch & lunch options; all accompanied by seasonally sourced coffee roasted directly on site. After months running the café as takeaway only, we’re stoked to offer seats and ceramics.
And with time we'll be extending our hours into the evenings too - those of you who've visited might have spotted the beer taps waiting patiently at the bar. If all goes to plan, they'll be flowing just in time for those long summer evenings.
Having our own space means we can finally start bringing to life all the things we described in our mission: being community-led, facilitating connections between people, offering a welcoming entry point to quality food and drink without pretension. We'll look forward to hosting supper clubs, gigs, cuppings and talks, as well as events; taking advantage of the wonderful space and central location.
But perhaps what we're most excited about is finally being able to turn those "someday" conversations into reality. All those ideas we've been sitting on since before we even launched Scenery now have a physical home where they can flourish. After eighteen months of bootstrapping things together and working around other people's schedules, it's hard to overstate how significant it feels to finally have our own four walls.
We'll shortly be announcing the date for opening the full space, and we can't wait to invite you to join us.
